The Kenny Allen Band blew up quickly on the Los Angeles country music scene. The Cowboy Palace Saloon in Los Angeles was ground zero. Only weeks in after the band formed, we started playing different clubs, private parties, casinos & festivals. The band started out as a 4 piece but quickly grew to a 7 piece–adding a fiddle, banjo & female vocalist–fantastic players at every position. They tell me I’M pretty good too... I play guitar, banjo, mandolin, blow some harmonica, but mostly sing lead vocals. We rehearsed a LOT!
The Kenny Allen Band won Los Angeles KHAY Country radio station Battle of the Country Bands. Appeared/performed for HBO TV series “Togetherness." Had a #1 song on the Cashbox charts with an original song, “Better Be Running." Ranked #1 Country Band on ReverbNation in California & the USA. Played the California Strawberry Festival, Oakheart Country Music Festival, Treasure Island Casino: Gilley’s in Las Vegas, NV, The House of Blues, The famous Ranch Saloon in Anaheim & so many other venues & private parties around the southern California country music scene.
I had heard about a popular country music nightclub in Los Angeles–The Cowboy Palace Saloon, (the last real honky tonk).
Monday night was open mic night. I checked it out & was amazed at the caliber of talent from the backline players. The lead guitar player sounded like Brent Mason & Albert Lee all rolled into one. In fact, he had played with Albert Lee & Freddy Fender on many occasions. The bass player had played with country legend George Jones & John York of the Byrds. I have no one to compare him to. He was the best I’ve ever heard to this day. Just…WOW!
After that Monday night, my goal in life, was to be on stage with the two of them. So, I showed up to open mic night every week for the next year with a different song each week. There’s 52 weeks in a year, & I had 52 songs at the end of it. What next you ask? Start a band!
